Asus Launches R2H Ultra Mobile PC

Asus R2H UMPCASUS has launched the R2H UMPC, a Windows XP Tablet PC Edition machine with a built-in high resolution webcam, GPS, biometric fingerprint authentication and a seven inch touchscreen. I must admit, if the UMPC came with an attached slide out keyboard rather than needing a seperate Bluetooth device, I would want one bad.

The R2H is also packed with other functions such as Bluetooth 2.0 EDR and WLAN 802.11a/b/g. In addition to the handwriting recognition which enables any user to have an intuitive input method right at their touch, the R2H also has a more traditional four-way cursor control pad, a motion navigation roller (similar to laptop “nubs”) and an optional external keyboard (pictured in the attached press release).

The Asus R2H will be available in September with an Intel ULV Celeron M 900MHz, 768MB DDRII 667 RAM, 60GB HDD, and for making sure you can move all your existing applications and files without the need for another PC an external USB DVD Dual D/L Drive.

Asus A8Js Review

Asus A8JsLaptop Magazine takes a look at the Asus A8Js, a gaming and multimedia machine with a reasonable screen.

At $1,499, you’re not likely to find a lower-priced notebook with this much 3D-graphics power.

The silver-and-black chassis weighs 5.2 pounds, and is comfortable in the hand thanks to the system’s rounded edges. Flip the lid and you’ll find a sharp-looking silver keyboard deck with a full-sized black keyboard. The keyboard is comfortable to use, though the glossy touchpad takes some getting used to. We were surprised to see no dedicated volume (you can use Fn + F11/F12) or multimedia buttons.

In the end the machine, with its Nvidia GeForce Go 7700, does pretty well in that it earns itself a four out of five.

Asus W5F Review

Asus W5FLaptop Magazine recently reviewed the Asus W5F, a compact machine with a webcam and many other reasonable features.

If you crave the multitasking power of a dual-core processor but want to travel light, Asus has your notebook. This 3.8-pound ultraportable delivers fast performance and looks good doing it with an attractive white-and-gray color scheme. Throw in multimedia amenities like a 1.3-megapixel webcam, a DVD burner, and a 4-in-1 memory card slot, and there’s a lot to like for $1,499.

The W5F’s gorgeous 12.1-inch, high-resolution screen makes photos, Web pages, and even program icons look especially sharp and colorful. DVD playback was crisp, but unfortunately, the screen had to be positioned at an exact 90-degree angle to maintain the best visuals; tilting it forward a hair washed out the colors, while tilting it back had the reverse effect.

Some of the things they liked included its fast performance, webcam and microphone, an excellent screen, and the textured touchpad. Some of the negatives they listed were the lack of a PC Card slot and limited tech support hours. In the end they gave the Asus W5F a four out of five, as well as an Editor’s Choice badge.

Asus W3J Review

Asus W3JTrustedReviews has recently reviewed the Asus W3J, a 14 inch screen notebook with a Core Duo processor and some reasonable graphic power.

The W3J is the second of two notebooks from Asus that have caught my eye recently. The first was the W5J, which packed a lot of power into a relatively diminutive shell thanks to a 2GHz Core Duo processor. The W5J was also noticeable for its white shell and fetching blue lights, designed to appeal to those in touch with their feminine side, or indeed females.

The W3J adds some more bulk, upping the weight from 1.6Kg to 2Kg with the standard battery and 2.2Kg with the extended battery, but for that you gain an extra two inches of diagonal screen size, (14in instead of 12in) and a far more powerful graphics chipset, an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, which makes games a realistic option.

In the end they give everything about the machine a 9 out of ten, though I don’t like its low battery life, needing the extended 8 cell battery to squeeze out just four hours of time away from a power socket is a little silly these days.

Asus W5F Core Duo Notebook Review

Asus W5FTrustedReviews looks at the Asus W5F, and Intel Core Duo powered notebook with a 12.1 inch screen and a webcam.

The immediate comment our photographer made when he first saw the Asus W5F was, “is it for girls?” He has a point. The W5F is small, neatly formed and clad in iPod white, enhanced with some rather fetching blue lights. It’s cool, but looks wise it’s a world away from a masculine ThinkPad.

However, it would be unwise to dismiss the W5F merely as a style affectation. With a 2GHz Intel Core Duo CPU there’s no doubt that this notebook punches above its fairly modest 1.6Kg weight. This notebook is currently available with Intel Core Duo T2300 and T2400 CPUs but this version featuring the 2GHz T2500 will be available from June. The suggested price will be around £1,399 but actual online prices are likely to be lower.

In the end the Asus W5F earns itself a rating of 8 out of 10, and it gets that in every one of TrustedReviews categories.

802.11n Compatible WiFi Laptop

TrustedReviews has details on what could be considered the first 802.11n compatible laptop, but what does that mean?

Asus, in conjunction with Airgo, has announced the first laptop that will take advantage of all the Draft 802.11n spec routers we’ve seen doing the rounds lately. The A6T features an integrated Airgo True MIMO card which the companies claim will provide a theoretical data throughput of almost 240Mbps and a consistent stream at 120Mbps - that’s faster than a wired 10/100 Ethernet connection! Furthermore, it will be backwards compatible will previous 802.11g and 802.11b equipment.

I don’t like this one bit. I know there are early adopters that companies are trying to tap into, but the fact that people are buying products that may not work with technology created later on once the final standard is approved really bugs me as a long time computer technician.

ASUS Dual-Core Dolby Surround Laptop

BIOS has put up some information on a dual core Dolby Surround sound laptop that will give some nice audio to a platform that is known for notoriously bad sound performance.

ASUS has today officially announced a new laptop range that incorporates the latest and most advanced Intel Centrino Duo Mobile technology for increased performance and multitasking capability.

Not only that, but the W2J has also met the stringent criteria to wear the Dolby Home Theater label that delivers a vivid surround sound experience for mobile entertainment.

In addition, the A7J features Dolby Digital Live, a real-time audio technology that transforms gameplay. The laptops have been designed with today’s busy urban lifestyles in mind, integrating a feature-rich digital device into both work and personal entertainment.

Having such a specialized audio playback ability will be a great thing for ASUS as people look for true multimedia laptops, but I will reserve judgement until I hear it for myself.

Asus W2V Review

Asus W2VLaptop Magazine looks at what I consider to be a high end desktop replacement in the Asus W2V, with it is 17-inch screen, I am sure it will be noticed, that is if you can afford the $2,599 USD price tag it comes with.

The Asus W2V is all about entertainment. This 17-inch stunner uses every square inch of its 7.5-pound frame to pack in all of the amenities you could want in a multimedia notebook, including a TV tuner, high-end ATI graphics for 3D games, and Microsoft’s Media Center OS. Decked out in a black brushed aluminum shell inside and out, the Asus W2V is quite possibly the coolest looking desktop replacement we’ve ever seen.

The W2V does manage to earn itself a four out of five on their review scale, only losing the last point because of lack-luster one year warranty, but if you add on a warranty option from the store you purchase it from, you should be very happy with the Asus W2V, and what it does.
