Fujitsu Produces Flash-only Laptop

Flash based hard drives have been talked about for a while now, but no manufacturer has really gone ahead to make them as the primary drive on their widely spread notebooks, as storage capacity and price were never at the right point compared to traditional hard drives.

Now, Fujitsu is putting the finishing touches on a new laptop that will use a flash drive in place of a traditional hard drive. They will come in 16GB and 32GB sizes which is plenty for a laptop or UMPC. You can expect to see them being more widely used sometime this November.

From TechWorld:

The Flash disk has several advantages over a conventional hard-disk drive, including longer battery life and a slight weight reduction. Fujitsu said the B-series machine will run an extra 15 minutes and the Q-series will run an extra 30 minutes on flash disk compared to hard-disk drive.

Most noticeable is faster start-up. Because data can be accessed from the flash memory much faster than a hard-disk drive, the B-series machine takes about 19 seconds to boot up Windows XP Home Edition compared to 32 seconds for a hard-disk drive version of the same machine.
