Sony VAIO VGN-S470P/S

The nice and light 4.3-pound S470P/S strikes a great balance between portability and usability.

A fast 1.7-GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and an 80GB hard drive give the S470P/S all of the horsepower and storage you’ll need at home, in the office, or on the go. A small switch on the bottom right of the notebook activates the 802.11b/g Wi-Fi radio.

The system’s 13.3-inch XBRITE widescreen delivers rich colors and excellent contrast, but beware of distracting reflections. The front-mounted optical drive may cause some headaches in cramped quarters, as it opens into your lap.

There is a FireWire port on the right side for importing video from your camcorder and a new dual layer DVD burner that records up to 8.5GB of data on a single disc. The two speakers above the keyboard got relatively loud, but lacked depth and clarity.

The Nvidia’s GeForce Go 6200 graphics is pretty good for gaming, especially in the world of integrated graphics on laptops.
